Anis Saadat Alighialoo

Art / Media Studies

I am currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Cologne, in the Faculty of Human Sciences, Department of Art & Art Theory. My research focuses on Digital Culture and Gender Studies, with particular emphasis on the intersection of Art, Media, Psychology, and Socio-Political Activism.

My dissertation, titled “From Hijab to Hashtag: Iranian Women Navigating Identity and Freedom on Social Media”, explores how Iranian women use Instagram to challenge traditional gender norms, redefine their identities, and engage in digital activism. It examines the cultural, socio-political, and emotional dimensions of digital media, focusing on Instagram's role in advancing gender equality and autonomy. By analyzing these strategies, my research aims to develop a replicable model for understanding digital activism in non-Western, politically restrictive societies, demonstrating the transformative potential of digital media in fostering gender justice.

I hold two Master's degrees – one in Art Research and the other in Clinical Psychology. Throughout my academic career, I have contributed to publications on Feminine Identity, Cultural Anthropology, and the intersections of Art and Psychology. My work integrates feminist theory with socio-cultural narratives and Digital Media Studies.
