Fannie Göttker

Fannie Rose Göttker (ehem. Beauchamp-Gauvin) ist Kunsthistorikerin und Doktorandin im Graduiertenkolleg „anschließen – ausschließen“. Sie studierte Kunstgeschichten an der Université du Québec à Montréal (Kanada, 2015) und Gender & Queer Studies an der Universität zu Köln (Deutschland, 2023). Ihre Masterarbeit mit dem Titel „Art Shows a Way Out: Posthumanist Critique in the Artistic Practices of Patricia Piccinini, Wangechi Mutu and Anicka Yi“ untersuchte, wie zeitgenössische künstlerische Praktiken Alternativen zu vorherrschenden anthropozentrischen Weltbildern aufzeigen können. Anhand der Analyse von drei postpandemischen Ausstellungen erforschte sie, wie sich künstlerische Praktiken mit den ökologischen und soziopolitischen Herausforderungen des Anthropozäns auseinandersetzen, und reflektierte dabei kritisch die Verstrickungen musealer Institutionen in kapitalistische Strukturen. Diese Fragen rund um Institutionskritik sowie zu den Möglichkeiten bzw. Grenzen institutioneller Transformation prägen auch ihre aktuellen Forschungsschwerpunkte, in denen die Auseinandersetzung mit Machtstrukturen durch Kunst und kuratorische Praktiken im Mittelpunkt steht.

Ihr Dissertationsprojekt mit dem Arbeitstitel „Measuring up? Artistic Interventions and the Politics of Scale in Canada“ erforscht die Beziehungen zwischen Vermessung, Macht und Repräsentation in der zeitgenössischen Kunst, mit besonderem Fokus auf die charakteristische soziopolitische Landschaft der kanadischen Provinz Québec. Ausgehend von der Einführung des metrischen Maßsystems in den 1970er Jahren als historischem Ausgangspunkt wird dabei reflektiert, wie ein technischer Standard zu einem ideologischen Instrument wurde, das Subjekte, Zeit und Raum innerhalb eines sich modernisierenden Siedlerstaates organisierte. Das Projekt diskutiert Vermessung als eine kulturelle Praxis des Anschlusses, die mit Machtdynamiken verbunden ist, und untersucht zeitgenössische künstlerische Praktiken des „Gegenmessens“: künstlerische Interventionen, die vorherrschende Quantifizierungsregime durch Mehrdeutigkeit, verkörpertes Wissen und situative Kritik unterlaufen.

Seit April 2025 ist sie gemeinsam mit Ségolène Bulot Sprecherin der Kollegiat*innen des Graduiertenkollegs.

Fannie Rose Göttker (née Beauchamp-Gauvin) is an art historian and doctoral researcher at the Research Training Group “connecting – excluding”. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art Histories from the Université du Québec à Montréal (Canada, 2015) and did her Master’s in Gender & Queer Studies at the University of Cologne (Germany, 2023). Her master’s thesis “Art Shows a Way Out: Posthumanist Critique in the Artistic Practices of Patricia Piccinini, Wangechi Mutu and Anicka Yi” explored how contemporary artistic practices can articulate alternatives to dominant anthropocentric worldviews. Through the analysis of three post-pandemic exhibitions, she examined how artistic practices engage with ecological and socio-political challenges of the Anthropocene, while also critically reflecting on the complicity of museum institutions within capitalist structures. These questions around institutional critique and the limits and possibilities of institutional transformation continue to shape her current research, which examines how art and curatorial practices engage with and challenge systems of power.

Her dissertation project with the working-title “Measuring up? Artistic Interventions and the Politics of Scale in Canada” examines the connections between measurement, power, and representation in contemporary art, with a particular focus on the distinctive socio-political landscape of the Canadian province of Québec. Using the metrication campaign of the 1970s in Canada as a historical anchor, the project reflects on how a technical standard became an ideological tool, organizing subjects, time, and space within a modernizing settler state. It investigates contemporary artistic practices of “counter-measuring” that subvert dominant regimes of quantification through ambiguity, embodied knowledge, and situated critique.

Since April 2025, she has been elected as PhD representative of the Research Training Group, alongside Ségolène Bulot.
