Das Panel widmet sich dem Übersetzen von räumlichen Konzepten als gewaltvolle Übertragungen in kolonialen Strukturen sowie Praktiken der Verweigerung einer Übersetzung, bzw. Gegensetzungen durch alternative Episteme von Raum. Ausgangspunkt ist Sonia Barretts Werk “Dreading the map”, das sich mit Landkarten, dem Fetisch der Kartographie auseinandersetzt. Barret verbindet damit eine westliche Ontologie, die Trennung von Mensch und “Natur” und deren Verwertung als Ressource. “Dreading the map” konstruiert ein alternatives Raummodell, das über Fläche, Fixpunkte und Verbindungslinien hinausgeht, und will statt einer Aufteilung und Trennung von geographischen Räumen eine Fluidität und Interrelationalität sichtbar machen. Wie kann dabei auch eine Handlungsmacht (agency) aller Lebewesen und von Materie, inklusive atmosphärischer Elemente, dargestellt werden? Das Panel lädt zur aktiven Teilhabe an kulturellen Praktiken des Flechtens und der Sorge aus Afro-Diasporischen Kontexten ein, um gemeinsam eine De- und Rekonstruktion geographischer Karten zu unternehmen.

Prof. Dr. Mine Gencel Bek: Speaking about Life Stories through Photographs: Notes from an Ethnographic Research
This study explores the life narratives of ten women who migrated from Turkey to Germany in order to understand gendering aspects of migration with inhabited power dynamics, constraints, and possibilities as well as their life trajectories. The interviews with women on their lives and migration stories were conducted through the photographs they chose to show and those on display in the houses. The research questions of the study are as follows: What do women do and say about their lives with the photos at home and with the ones that they show? Which themes, words and discourses are repeated, absent, or silenced? How do they construct and contest their identities and feelings of belongings? How do they remember and connect with their past places and relations and imagine a future.

Silencing: Exclusion and Censorship in Western Academe

In which ways are critical practices included/excluded by institutions that produce and engage in the production of knowledge? Critical approaches open new paths for research, they make visible phenomena that have long been overlooked and they open the door for social/political changes that are more than urgent in our present societies. Nevertheless, critical practices do not seem to be equally welcome when they reflect on the structure and organization of the same institutions that claim and defend the value of critical practices. Critical theories (race studies, black studies, feminists studies and postcolonial studies, among others) seem to be praised as long as they do not challenge the very core of the epistemic/bureaucratic system governing modern knowledge-production institutions (from museums to universities, from NGOs to government Ministries). Inclusion of theories and exclusion of people seems to replicate the capitalist motto of “open borders for products/closed borders for people” that exploit, extract and profit from the knowledge of minorities, immigrants and refugees once they enter the academic/bureaucratic system of hegemonic countries. How do the complex positionalities of foreign scholars deal with these situations? What are the questions to pose to these systems and institutions? And what are the projects needed to build a fair division of the intellectual labor?
